2022 iX wins Best Interior and UX award
The electric BMW iX, which arrived early in 2022, recently won a Wards 10 Best Interior and UX award.
Immediately apparent in its interior design is that in place of the buttons and switches ordinarily found on a dashboard is the BMW Curved Display, a 12.3-inch information display and 14.9-inch control display housed in a single curved glass screen angled toward the driver.
Drivers access and control infotainment, navigation, and driver assistance systems through this display, which is powered by the eighth iteration of BMW’s iDrive technology. The intended result is a sleek and uncluttered dashboard that accentuates the car’s spacious interior.
“We want to provide our customers a top-level digital experience, one that easily makes their vehicle a natural extension of their existing digital ecosystem,” Andreas Meyer, vice president of BMW Product Management Americas,
“The iX succeeds in doing this while placing them in a comfortable, contemporary interior that allows them to relax and focus on the joy and pleasure of driving.”
Notably, the iX’s headliner, carpets, and floor mats are made using Econyl, recycled nylon made from fishing nets and other plastic waste.
Meanwhile, BMW recently unveiled its M Hybrid V8 prototype racecar ahead of on-track testing for the 2023 IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship. The car was collaboratively designed by BMW M Motorsport, BMW Group Designworks, and Italian racecar manufacturer Dallara.
, the car’s designers were tasked specifically with ensuring the car was immediately recognizable as a bimmer, a goal which the unmistakable BMW logo at the car’s front and center evidently doesn’t adequately accomplish.
“My team's job was to make the BMW M Hybrid V8 look like a BMW and embrace every opportunity to make it also perform like one on the race track,” said BMW Group Designworks Global Automotive Director Michael Scully.
“The design is rooted in BMW’s DNA of purposeful, efficient performance, and the exterior’s bold, determined character invokes BMW's frontiersmanship of turbo power; now united with an optimized hybrid electric powertrain.”
Additionally, the team designed a camouflage color scheme comprising a mosaic of images from BMW’s racing history to lend the car a distinctive appearance “while uniquely cloaking the BMW M Hybrid V8’s future-facing exterior geometry and technologies during the critical on-track development phase of the project.”
