How reliability is determined

In order to calculate a car’s reliability score,
Consumer Reports
takes information from surveys that ask new owners various questions about things that could go wrong with a new car. Overall, 17 trouble areas are evaluated.
These trouble areas include everything from minor nuisances like squeaky brakes to major issues like out-of-warranty transmission problems. The severity of each problem reported is then aggregated and weighed to create the reliability score.
In order to calculate the predicted reliability score, Consumer Reports must have at least two model years of data.

The top three least reliable new cars according to Consumer Reports

According to Consumer Reports, the top three least reliable new cars are:
  • 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE
  • 2022 Ford Explorer
  • 2022 Ford Mustang
If you already own one of these cars, don’t panic—these cars can still have some great features, there are just certain trouble spots you might want to know about.

What’s wrong with the 2022 Mercedes GLE?

For the Mercedes-Benz GLE, trouble spots included power equipment, the climate system, engine, in-car electronics, noises, and leaks.
There have also been two recalls of this model year, one for an overheated electrical cable that can increase the risk of a fire, and another for a disabled eCall system that would prevent a vehicle occupant from contacting emergency services.

What’s wrong with the 2022 Ford Explorer?

The 2022 Ford Explorer reportedly scored low on reliability for issues with the transmission, power equipment, in-car electronics, drive system, noises, and leaks.
There have also been two recalls on the Ford Explorer for a detached fuel filler tube and a disconnected driveshaft. The detached fuel filler tube can cause a fuel leak, which can increase the risk of fire while the disconnected driveshaft can result in a vehicle rollaway when the vehicle is placed in ‘Park.’

What’s wrong with the 2022 Ford Mustang?

Lastly is the Ford Mustang. While this scored the highest of the top three least reliable, it still experienced serious issues concerning the steering and suspension, transmission, power equipment, brakes, drive system, and in-car electronics.
There have been two recalls of the Mustang for improper airbag deployment and a malfunctioning collision avoidance camera.
