If you’ve got loud neighbors, you know how life-changing noise-canceling headphones can be.
But what if you could get a noise-canceling car? If you don’t need to hear the roar of a thirsty V8 engine or the sound of turbo spinning under the hood, you’ve come to the right place.

So how do noise-canceling cars work?

Just like noise-canceling headphones, noise-canceling cars cancel out unwanted sounds. Active noise cancellation is a technology that cancels out wind, tire, and road noises by producing sound frequencies. Fortunately, the tech doesn’t cancel out sounds essential for safety, like car horns and sirens.
The in-vehicle systems reduce background noise by using microphones to monitor sound frequencies and levels. A processor interprets that info and creates a separate signal with an inverted phase. And the car speakers play that specific sound that interacts with existing sounds, with the ability to partly or wholly cancel them out.
Even though the system uses part of your car’s stereo, if the audio system is off, active noise cancellation will still work.
It’s important to note the difference between active noise cancellation and sound insulation. When sound deadening, physical material is installed to prevent any entering sounds. Carmakers typically add sound insulation between the exterior and interior panels. Other autos use thicker glass like double-paned glass to help with the sound as well.
Basically, sound insulation is a barrier that muffles exterior noises, and active noise cancellation negates unwanted sounds using other sounds.
Typically reserved for the affluent, active noise-canceling cars used to be found in luxury and premium trims. While technology is still more popular among luxury brands, you can now find it in vehicles like the Honda Accord. It’s also become a selling point for Buicks, as the automaker offers a complete line of noise-canceling cars.

The best noise-canceling cars on the market

One of the best full-size luxury sedans in the world, the 2019 Lexus LS was revamped for the 2018 model year. The noise-canceling car was equipped with an all-new twin-turbocharged 416 hp V6 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The LS 500 and the LS 500h hybrid feature advanced passive sound-deadening techniques. Even without noise-cancellation, these would both be a pleasant and serene ride. According to
Autobytel
, the “sound-suppression technology hushes the cabin environment even further when compared to previous LS models.”
The 2019 Nissan Maxima is known for its sportiness, style, and most importantly, its value. The large sedan sports a stalwart 3.5-liter V6 engine with 300 hp and 261 lb-ft of torque. Nissan's active noise cancellation works well with its Active Sound Enhancement system which changes the engine noises into more enjoyable sounds.
The affordable 2019 Honda Accord is a comfy five-seater that’s loads of fun to drive. It’s also one of the best model years for the Accord. Even in the noise-canceling car’s base trim, drivers receive alloy wheels, automatic climate control, automatic headlights, and push-button ignition.
The Accord uses Active Noise Control (ANC) and Active Sound Control (ASC) that operate even if the audio system is off.
The 2019 Buick LaCrosse Avenir features a 3.6-liter V6 engine, three-dimensional mesh upper and lower grille paired with chrome wings, 19-inch or available 20-inch wheels, and Avenir script badging on the front doors. Dual-zone automatic climate control, a heated steering wheel, and heated and ventilated front seats are enough to keep any driver happy.
Drivers will also receive the complete suite of Buick’s QuietTuning. The process works to block, absorb and reduce noise and vibration utilizing ultra-dissipative acoustic materials. That paired with active noise cancellation makes for one quiet cabin.
The 2019 Acura RLX often gets overlooked by those shopping for crossover SUVs from the brand. The luxury sedan offers interior tranquility and sophistication on a whole other level. While not as powerful as the Acura RLX Sport Hybrid, the noise-canceling car cranks out 310 hp paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The RLX uses active noise control to reduce the low-frequency sound caused by the tires. As engine revolutions increase, active sound control makes the sound level more linear.
