These Are the Best JDMs of 2022

Japan hasn’t given up on the car as we have. Should their 2022 models convince Americans to get back into these small, short, street-huggers?

SUVs might rule the streets in the U.S., but in
Japan
, the car still dominates. Some models sold in the country, like its miniature kei cars, aren’t available this side of the Pacific, but the ones that make it here continue to lead the (admittedly shrinking) segment.
Obviously, not every car has the same intended use. While some buyers choose the smaller set of wheels to save money on gas and car insurance, others look for the dynamic handling and speed of sports cars. Japan’s automakers have models to fit any driver’s needs.
Jerry
, your car insurance super app, took a look at the cars coming from Japan to give you the highlights from the model year 2022.

2022’s best JDM sedans

Four-door cars used to rule the family market, and we’re not sure why they’ve fallen out of favor. The excellent mileage and ample trunk space make them just as suitable for shipping kids to school and soccer as their big tall SUV rivals.
Japan hasn’t given up on the sedan the way most U.S. drivers have, and their 2022 models show it. Larger models like the Honda Accord and Toyota Avalon offer plenty of passenger space and luxury-level interior options, and their hybrid models offer excellent fuel efficiency.
You can get
hybrid versions
of smaller models like the Toyota Camry and Honda Insight, too, but compact cars will save you money on gas no matter what powertrain you choose.
The Honda Civic is a valiant mainstay in the category, while the Mazda 3 offers a little more style and performance to make it more fun to drive.

The best JDM sports cars from 2022

While Japanese-made cars all have their benefits, the vehicles people really get excited about are the country’s sports cars. Thanks in part to the popularity of the Fast and Furious franchise, JDM is now synonymous with speed.
Japan first made a name for itself in the segment by providing high performance for low prices, and there are plenty of examples of this kind of car to choose from in 2022.
The new Toyota Supra will still put you back over $40,000, but the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ can both be bought for less than $30,000—plus, they’re available with manual transmissions, making them excellent choices for driving enthusiasts.
A few brands have ventured into the luxury and supercar space as well, with impressive results. The Acura NSX Type S, for example, has more in common with top-trim Porsche 911s than Mustangs or Chargers (no surprise, seeing as it can reach 60 mph in 2.5 seconds).

Coverage for new JDM cars

Like vehicles from any country,
car insurance
for JDM models changes depending on the intended use and value of the car.
That said, the mass production of most of the cars listed above (the Acura NSX Type S being the exception) means that repairs tend to be pretty affordable, which can help lower premiums.
