background
Asphalt 9 Legends, a racing game from Gameloft Barcelona, came out in 2018. It’s the ninth in their Asphalt series and boasts real cars, including
hypercars
for players to race. While the initial game is free, there are in-game purchases and additional expansion packs that cost money.

The basic game mechanics of Asphalt 9 Legends

Asphalt 9, is available on multiple platforms like mobile, desktop, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Players start in San Francisco and can race multiple times until they reach their goal of 3rd place or higher. As the game continues, it teaches players how to achieve different moves like:
  • Drifting
  • Spins including 360 spins to knock out other cars
  • Nitro (four types, including basic and perfect, to give you speed boosts)
  • Shockwave
There’s also assistance called Touch Drive, which keeps you from swerving around the road too much if your device is overly sensitive or glitchy and allows you to move forward without getting all turned around if you move your device wrong.
New cars are received via blueprint cards. Collect enough cards and you can get an upgrade or unlock a specific car. These cards are available via winning certain routes or via tokens. Players can receive tokens when they start but can also cost real-world money.
Tokens cost between $1.99 for 40 to $99.99 for 3,000. These tokens can be used to purchase credits and to unlock and collect cards.
There are also free daily bonuses. Select card packs are free when you log in daily or even just frequently, with timers letting you know when you can retrieve your next free classic card pack or gas refill to keep playing.
After 20 career flags, you can also unlock clubs. Aka, you can talk with other players around the world. There are different challenges, daily goals, and season missions you can complete to get career flags and upgrade your garage and cars.

The cars and tracks of Asphalt 9

According to
Gameloft
, there are 49 cars available in five different classes to race in Asphalt 9 on 70 tracks. Some of the cars available are basic, like the starter cars in class D, like the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, A BMW Z4 LCI E89, Chevrolet Camaro LT,  Nissan Leaf Nismo RC, and more.
But the special cars that most drivers might not get a chance to drive in real life include:
  • McLaren P1
  • Lamborghini TerzoMillennio
  • Porsche 718 Cayman
  • Rimac C_Two
  • Aspark Owl
  • Bugatti La Voiture Noire
  • Koenigsegg Jesko
  • SSC Tuatara
The tracks of Asphalt 9 include the starting races in San Fransico and the Himalayas, Scotland, Cairo, Shanghai, Rome, and more are available in purchased expansion packs.

Asphalt 9 Legends versus other racing games

Racing games are a staple of video games, from the fantastical worlds of Mario Kart to the old-school arcade games. This style of the game always has been and always will be a huge part of gaming culture.
According to
Gameloft
, Asphalt 9 legends has been downloaded “100 million times worldwide” and won awards like:
  • The Tabby Award for the Best iPhone Racing Game in 2018
  • The Best Audio/Visual Accomplishment Award from Pocket Gamer
  • The Design Award from Apple in 2019
The vehicles in the games are realistic, and you get to drive cars many only dream of, like the SSC Tuatara or Koenigsegg Jesko, cars with limited production runs and high price tags.
However, unlike an old-school arcade game or playing Mario kart with one's friends, those daily rewards and in-game purchases can get dangerous. Especially since getting those S-class dream cars isn’t easy.
While the initial game is free, the cheapest expansion pack is a $9.99 Christmas pack, while in general, they range between $14.99 to $49.99. It’s a little hard to get excited for these since those are the average costs of general games that should include everything.
In-app purchases in games should be treated cautiously. Be very careful when interacting with sections and parts of the games that could require you to spend your hard-earned money.
