background
While there are many unique
classic cars
out in the world, oftentimes drivers will find two vehicles that have a lot more similarities than differences. This phenomenon occurs in a major way with the Plymouth Sundance and Dodge Shadow, two vehicles that are essentially the same.
Learn more about these two Chrysler vehicles that are nearly identical.

The Plymouth Sundance and Dodge Shadow origins

The Plymouth Sundance and Dodge Shadow, coined the P-Body cars, share the same origins, structure and features. According to
Jalopnik
, the Plymouth Sundance and Dodge Shadow P-Body cars were conceptualized as a replacement to replace the popular Chrysler K-Body cars.
The only catch was that Chrysler wanted a low budget option for the replacement to the K-Body. The Sundance and Shadow were created with the existing K-Body platform, but an added modern spin. The Shadow and Sundance were around from 1987 to 1995.

The Plymouth Sundance and Dodge Shadow builds

Both the Plymouth Sundance and the Dodge Shadow were based heavily on the K-Body cars, but actually ended up having a shorter wheelbase than the K-Body vehicles. The Sundance and Shadow were also heavier and appeared bigger than the K-Body vehicles. To make driving and handling a little bit better, the cars featured anti-sway bars and gas struts. Both vehicles had the exact same structure and build, and both were hatchbacks
Under the hood of the Sundance and Shadow was another similarity—the engine. The base engine for both vehicles was a 2.2-liter, inline-four that was actually also taken from the K-Body vehicles. An engine upgrade to a 2.5-liter inline-four that produced 150 hp was available for both vehicles, too.

The Plymouth Sundance and Dodge Shadow sales

Even the pricing and sales figures for the Plymouth Sundance and Dodge Shadow were nearly identical.
While the Dodge Shadow did have more trims available in some model years and therefore sold a tad more, the Sundance and Shadow had extremely similar sales numbers. Because the Dodge Shadow had more trims, there were also Shadows available for slightly more expensive prices.
Car Gurus
shows both a 1994 Shadow and a 1994 Sundance for an instant market value of $10,757.

Were there any differences between the Sundance and the Shadow?

Evidently, these two vehicles had very minimal differences, but there were some things that varied slightly. The most obvious distinction is the names of the two vehicles. Despite being essentially the same, they were called two different names, which counts for something.
Additionally, the 1990 Dodge Shadow came with the option to upgrade the engine to a 2.2-liter engine that produced 175 hp. That extra boost of speed and power was not available for the Plymouth Sundance in any year. Plus,
Autopolis
reports the front grilles, wheels, and at times, trim options, slightly differed between the Shadow and Sundance. But, besides these minor differences, the cars were tried and true identical.
