Is the 1,000-hp SRT Ghoul real?

The buzz around the Dodge SRT Ghoul started in 2020 after Carbuzz posted an article about it. Instead of the standard Hellcat V8, it would have a "Hellephant" V8 capable of 1,000 horsepower. This crate engine was previously only available as a limited aftermarket purchase.

Carbuzz cited a sketch on Instagram as "proof" of the SRT Ghoul's existence. The website didn't really provide any other information about the car, only that it would cost around $200,000.

Afterward, Carbuzz revealed that it had been an April Fools Joke. Even though it was a ruse, "SRT Ghoul" became one of the most popular search queries throughout the month.

reported on the story again last year. Writer Jay Traugott said that Dodge was impressed by fan reception on the 2020 story, so the Ghoul was immediately greenlit. It seems far-fetched, but readers were nonetheless excited.

This time, Carbuzz confirmed that the 1,000-hp engine would also have 950 lb-ft of torque. It would also be paired with an Allison transmission. The suspension would reportedly receive some significant tuning upgrades, and the vehicle would only be available as a widebody model.

To add even more fuel to the fire, Carbuzz warned that the SRT Ghoul would be limited to just 100 units. Reservations would start on April 1.

Are there any new developments for 2022?

As you probably expected, preorders for the Dodge Charger SRT Ghoul never opened. According to

, Stellantis still has no plans to produce the SRT Ghoul at all.

To date, the closest thing we've received to the Ghoul was the Dodge SRT Demon. These rare models can make up to 840 horsepower when supplied with premium fuel. It was only available for the 2018 model year.

How likely is a Dodge SRT Ghoul release?

If the Dodge SRT Ghoul really was built, it would have a short production run. Stellantis plans to go all-electric by 2030, which means no 1,000-horsepower Hellephant engine. The Dodge Charger is also headed for extinction by 2024.

It's also questionable that this engine would even pass emissions testing at all, due to its aftermarket tuning. However, MotorTrend believes that the Ghoul could get an EV treatment.

It would be more aerodynamic without the need for a grille, making it easier to rein in its 1,000 ponies. Without a grille, it would also look similar to the 1969 Dodge Daytona. The Daytona also came with a massive spoiler and a distinct tapered nose cone.

This prank continues to gain traction each year, showing that consumers still want this 1,000-hp beast. If it ever happens, we might be more inclined to believe some SRT Demon news that isn't released on April 1.
