Well, it has happened again—another recall of defective vehicles. It seems like hardly a month goes by without one vehicle or another being recalled. Fortunately,
Jerry
can keep you up to date on this latest recall.
It probably shouldn't be surprising, considering all of the moving parts and futuristic technology that goes into making a modern car or truck. When parts get that numerous and the technology that complicated, it's not surprising that things sometimes (or even often!) go awry.
This latest
recall
involves a software issue affecting nearly half a million Toyota and Lexus vehicles from the model years 2020 through 2022.

Why the recall?

It seems that disabling your stability control program and then turning off the vehicle is a really bad idea if that vehicle happens to be one of those under recall.
That's because the stability control program won't automatically reengage the next time you go for a drive. When your vehicle's stability control program isn't working like it's supposed to, your car may not respond as you expect it to, especially on curves or when cornering.
A stability control system that doesn't function properly all the time puts your vehicle "...out of compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards" according to
CNET
.
It also increases the chances of your car skidding or sliding laterally, which can sometimes have deadly consequences. By correcting understeering or oversteering,  a properly working stability control system will help keep your car in its own lane where it belongs. Otherwise, you'll have to correct a skid on your own!

How to get your recalled vehicle fixed

Fortunately, the fix for this recall is relatively quick and simple. Your Toyota or Lexus technician just needs to update the skid control module software on your vehicle and you'll be safely back on the road in no time.
Both companies plan to begin notifying affected customers around the middle of May, so watch for a letter in your mailbox.
If you don't receive a letter, or have further questions, contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Reference recall #22TA03 for Toyota. Use recall #22LA01 if your vehicle is a Lexus.

The vehicles affected by the recall

The six recalled Toyotas include the
Highlander Hybrid
, Mirai, RAV4 Hybrid, RAV4 Prime, Sienna, and Venza models.
Four Lexus models are involved, including the LS Hybrid, LX, NX Hybrid, and NX PHEV models. The exact number of vehicles being recalled is 458,054 between the two brands.
This is hardly the first recall Toyota has had to issue. Earlier this year they had to recall another 31,000 Yaris (2019 and 2020 models) because of a faulty fuel pump.
That same faulty fuel pump recall has already resulted in 3.3 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles being recalled since January 2020. The earlier recall affected vehicles built between July 2017 and December 2019.
Automotive supplier Denso produced the defective parts, which can result in ignition failure or your car suddenly stalling, potentially resulting in an accident.
Toyota and Lexus weren't the only brands affected by the defective part. It was also used in Ford, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru models.
