Used cars
were in the news this year for all the wrong reasons. But the bad press mostly focused on the prices of recent models and their reluctance to drop the way we’re used to seeing. Opting for older models can still be a great way to save money.
But how do you avoid the lemons? Well,
Consumer Reports
(CR) created a list of reliable used models to help you with just that, going back a whole decade to direct you toward the best used cars.

2013 Honda Accord

We might be more prone to choosing SUVs over cars today, but the sedan was alive and well in 2012. CR says the 2013 Honda Accord was among the best of them and will only cost you between $12,400 and $15,700.
Over the last 10 years, the 2013 Accord has proved to be more reliable than most. Its continuously variable transmission (CVT) continues to perform well, and for its age, it travels an impressive 28 miles per gallon.
It also received excellent safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

2013 Subaru Outback

If you know anything about Subaru, it will come as no surprise to you that the 2013 Outback made CR’s list of the most reliable 10-year-old cars. The automaker is well-known for making cars that maintain their value and stay out of repair shops.
When it came out, wagons were still a common sight—now, not so much. But that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the AWD car’s good gas mileage or the camera-based EyeSight safety system that comes in the 2.5i Premium
trim level
Choosing the wagon over an SUV also lowers the price of your used car. CR says the Subaru Outback can be found for anywhere between $10,175 and $13,500.

2013 Toyota Prius V

Toyota continues to offer the Prius today, but the Prius V dropped off the lineup after 2017. Another wagon, CR says it’s a safe, reliable car that can serve a family much easier than its smaller sibling.
Despite being larger, the Prius V’s hybrid powertrain still offers excellent gas mileage, managing an impressive 41 mpg. While you won’t necessarily feel pampered inside the car, CR says it will get you where you need to go for only $14,600.

Coverage for these safe, reliable, 10-year-old cars

CR clearly knows the audience for its list of safe, reliable used cars. It’s partially why it chose models from Honda, Subaru, and Toyota instead of Volvo, Audi, or BMW.
But the initial affordability of these cars isn’t the only reason why they’re cheap to insure. Car insurance tends to drop with car value, so the older your car, the more you’re likely to save on coverage.
