The 2023 BMW iX vs the 2022 BMW iX: Key Differences

Both the BMW iX years have polarizing designs, but when it comes to deciding between the two the newest version is the best one.

When the
BMW
iX first debuted, it definitely wasn't an instant hit with consumers. While it boasts excellent efficiency and plenty of horsepower, many drivers still hate its appearance. Its BMW badge, combined with its electric powertrain, also doesn't exactly equal cheap

premiums.
Car and Driver
says the BMW iX is back for 2023, naysayers aside. What's the difference between the 2022 and 2023 models, and which one deserves your money more?

What's new for the 2023 BMW iX?

For the latest model year, the BMW iX M60 debuts with a suggested price tag of $106,095. C/D says this model has two electric motors producing a combined 610 horsepower, plus an auto-leveling air suspension and regenerative braking.
This new powertrain should be able to hit 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. In addition to its extra speed, the new rear-wheel steering system will enhance its handling. It will also have a healthy 280 miles of range, while the base powertrain can travel for 324 miles on a full charge.

What about last year's model?

Other than the M60, the only difference between the old and the new model is the price. The 2022 base model cost $83,200 at launch, now expected to rise to $85,000.
For that price, you get two electric motors that can produce 516 horsepower. It's also still fast by C/D's standards, reaching 60 mph in an even four seconds. AWD is standard, and the M60's suspension and rear-wheel steering are both available as optional equipment.
Both iX models can seat five riders on your choice of microfiber cloth, real leather, or synthetic leather. The front seats can be optioned with massaging and ventilation settings (heating is standard).
According to
U.S. News
, the seats provide excellent support and there's plenty of room in the back row for adults. The cargo area is spacious and versatile, though some might be disappointed at the iX's lack of a frunk.
The BMW iX was one of the first BMW cars to implement the updated iDrive 8 interface. It's presented on a curved touchscreen that includes both the infotainment screen and the driver's gauge monitors.
Smartphone integration, navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an in-car digital assistant are all standard. Pretty much every convenience function has to be operated through the massive touchscreen, which proved annoying for some critics.
One of the most attractive extras is the 30-speaker Bowers and Wilkins system, but the standard 18-speaker option is hardly a compromise. Both include integrated speakers for the front seat headrests.

The 2023 BMW iX vs. the 2022 BMW iX: which one is better?

If performance is your number-one priority (and you've got the extra cash), buying the 2023 BMW iX M60 might seem like a no-brainer. Since pretty much every other feature carries over unchanged, other drivers might struggle to justify the cost.
The base 2022 BMW iX is still fun to drive, and lightly-used models will likely start popping up with lower prices soon. Both models still share the same polarizing design, but there's always hope for next year.

2023 BMW iX vs. 2022 BMW iX: which one has cheaper insurance?

In most cases, the newest model year of any given vehicle will have higher insurance premiums. That's especially true of the 2023 iX, now that its MSRP is officially in the six-digit territory. A full-coverage policy on the average Beemer can cost as much as
$3,070 each year
