Alfa Romeo will be releasing the all-new Tonale, a small all-wheel-drive
SUV
with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain option, in early 2023. This will be part of the automaker's small vehicle line, with similar looks to the Stelvio SUV.
With lovely Italian styling and a reasonable price point, the Tonale is certainly a car to keep your eye on if you’re considering a luxury SUV.

Tonale powertrain options

The Tonale will offer a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 256 hp. This will be paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. It will also have 295 lb-ft of torque, making it rather powerful for an SUV of this size. The Alfa Romeo SUV will even start under $40,000 at around $38,000.
Its other powertrain option is a plug-in hybrid model, featuring a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder alongside a 90-kW electric motor with a 15.5 kWh battery. Together, they’ll produce 272 hp, and will come with a 6-speed auto transmission.
The traditional gasoline engine controls the front wheels, and the electric motor controls the rear wheels. The Tonale hybrid can go 30 miles on the electric motor alone. Both powertrains will be all-wheel drive.
The Tonale will feature Alfa Romeo’s active suspension system. Different modes can be selected by the driver to enable varying engine performance outputs for optimum driving conditions. You can opt for sportier driving with tighter handling, a cushier, comfy ride, or an eco setting for efficiency.
Alfa Romeo has not released fuel economy numbers or 0-60 mph times yet. But,
Consumer Reports
says “If the Tonale is anything like its stablemates, handling and performance should be magnifico.”
While Alfa Romeo insists the hybrid option proves that the automaker is serious about
transitioning to alternate fuels
, Consumer Reports predicts that most of the Tonale sales will be the traditional gasoline engine options.

Alfa Romeo styling

The Tonale will have instantly recognizable Alfa Romeo details, both inside and out. It looks similar to the existing Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Giulia.
Car and Driver
says the car’s “sharp-nosed face”, a signature Alfa Romeo look, accentuates its enticing bodywork. The Tonale will feature the classic Alfa Romeo grille, with a rounded triangle centerpiece. However, beauty isn’t only found on the outside.
The interior photos that have been released thus far show all black with red contrast stitching. If you choose red, white, or black for the exterior, though, then there is a red leather interior available.
The control panels and driver instruments have buttons and switches for the climate system, but it also has a 12.3-inch digital screen behind the wheel. It also features a conventional gear shift and circular air vents. The Tonale will be bedecked in microsuede, leather, and metallic trims.

The Tonale has some exciting features

According to
Consumer Reports
, the Tonale will have the easy-to-use Uconnect 5 for its infotainment system on a 10.25 inch digital screen. It is compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon’s Alexa.
It will feature all the modern safety features like pedestrian detection, emergency braking, driver monitoring, blind-spot warnings, rear traffic warnings, and a comprehensive camera system. It will also come with adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist among other safety features.
In a break from the norm, Alfa has promised that their Tonales will come with a non-fungible token (NFT). Though it seems strange, these NFTs will apparently allow the car’s service history to be documented on a blockchain.
The intention is to make the history of the car very clear and transparent, as opposed to the traditional VIN database that is used for most cars.
