There are a lot of options on the market in terms of
new cars
, and a nice one is the 2022 Volkswagen Passat. Unlike the 2022 VW Taos, the last Passat model year is actually a pretty good car, and it's a fitting send-off to the name. Here's a look at the VW Passat's history, and how the latest and last Passat rates.

The VW Passat has been around for almost 50 years

After almost 50 years in the U.S. market, Volkswagen is ending production of the Passat, according to
Car and Driver
. The Passat originally debuted as the Dasher back in 1974, but VW's made quite a few changes to it since.
The car was originally sold as the Dasher in the’ 70s, but VW changed its name to Quantum in the ‘80s. Finally, in 1990, VW gave it the Passat name that's stuck around for so long. To date, VW has sold about 800,000 Passats.
Over the years, VW made changes to the Passat to make it more appealing to Americans. This hasn't worked too well, as sedans aren't very popular in the U.S. anymore. That's ultimately why VW discontinued selling the Passat in America, but not before it unveiled the 2022 Passat.

According to
Consumer Reports
, the 2022 VW Passat is a pretty good car. It received an overall score of 71 out of 100, and it was also recommended by Consumer Reports. The Passat didn't score well in every category, but it did score highly on its road test, which it got a score of 77 out of 100 on.
The main reason why the 2022 VW Passat scored well on its road test has to do with its interior. The Passat's interior is spacious, with comfortable seats even though the Passat isn't a luxury sedan. The cabin is also pretty quiet, keeping the ride comfortable for everyone.
The 2022 VW Passat starts at about $27,500, making it comparable to other midsize sedans like the Toyota Camry. However, the Passat only got a 42 out of 100 in terms of its value rating. Its reliability rating was also about average with a score of 3 out of 5.

The features and specs of the 2022 VW Passat

The 2022 VW Passat has a good 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that gets 174 horsepower. This engine allows it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.9 seconds, but it still has a pretty decent fuel economy getting 17 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on highways.
Volkswagen also gave the Passat plenty of smart safety features including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, among other safety features.
Since the 2022 VW Passat is a midsize sedan, its cargo capacity is also pretty good for a smaller car. The trunk can hold a few suitcases, and drivers can fold down the rear seats to get even more cargo capacity.
