Subaru
announced its upcoming 2022 WRX sport sedan, complete with a redesign of the longtime model.
At first glance, Subaru’s latest offering seems to be an upgrade, but looking a little deeper below the surface, we see some questionable choices.
If this newest take on the WRX is supposed to be a step up, car enthusiasts are wondering why Subaru made the design choices it did for the car. And they’re not afraid to share their feedback.

The 2022 Subaru WRX first look

First, let’s look at the touted features of the 2022 WRX to get an idea of what the model offers.
Starting on the outside, the vehicle style has a modernized look to its body. But it also has the black plastic trim around the wheel wells and underside of the car.
On the inside,
U.S. News
tells us the engine has been upgraded from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder to a turbocharged 2.4-liter boxer four-cylinder. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard, with a new CVT available.
Subaru is also offering for the first time a WRX GT model, with adaptive suspension dampers, high-performance summer tires, and additional drive mode options.
The interior has been kept familiar, but equipped with the latest gadgets, including a huge touchscreen with infotainment and navigation. The WRX also comes with Subaru’s latest EyeSight technology suite.

Is the WRX redesign really a step up?

Car enthusiasts have taken to online forums like
Reddit
to break down the reviews of the WRX.
Taking a deeper look into the redesign, they find that the ‘upgrades’ made to this 2022 model don’t actually have much benefit to the car’s potential drivers.
Reddit users compiled their list of complaints into four key points, and their arguments are quite fair.
First, they point out that despite the increase in engine size, the horsepower increase is only three. With the WRX retaining most of its other specs, such as weight, car enthusiasts don’t see this ‘big’ change as having any effect at all on the car’s performance.
As for the exterior style, the general consensus is that the car is not stylish or sporty at all. The plastic wraparound gives the car a “Crosstrek” look, which some love. But for a sporty sedan, the design choice doesn’t really mesh.
The style choice is not a popular one among car enthusiasts, which, as Redditors pointed out, is the main buyer of this model.

Car enthusiasts are also baffled by Subaru’s choice to only offer the top GT trim with CVT transmissions. The GT trim comes with electronically controlled dampers, Recaro branded seats, drive mode select, and 18-inch wheels. While a manual transmission comes standard in the 2022 WRX, a nod to its key potential buyers, a desirable trim isn’t available to them with their transmission of choice? What gives?
Lastly, Redditors were puzzled by Subaru’s installation of the massive touchscreen. As they pointed out, there was a nonsensical blend of touchscreen controls and button controls for some of the car’s features.
At the same time, because the WRX is AWD, it’s become a popular car in colder climates, where touchscreens are less effective thanks to the cold and gloved hands worn by drivers.
Their conclusion can only be, and rightly so, that Subaru didn’t take the needs of the car’s potential drivers into consideration when they made this redesign.
Of course don’t take our word for it, if you’re interested in a WRX check one out for yourself. It’s impossible to design a car that will make everyone happy, so going for a test drive is the only true way to figure out which car is right for you.
