Going fast and climbing boulders has never looked so good! Too bad most 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class vehicles will only ever explore city streets. The German automaker,
Mercedes-Benz
, has been manufacturing the mid-size four-wheel drive luxury SUV since 1979. Described as a “brick on wheels,” the exterior has not changed much since the original military inspiration.
Despite the boxy frame’s lack of aerodynamics, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is both speedy like a sports car and capable of traversing any terrain. If that isn’t enough to convince buyers, the plethora of luxurious options inside the cabin probably will!

The many features of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The G-Class is often referred to as G-Wagen, meaning “off-road vehicle.” This is a well-deserved title according to
CarBuzz
, since the new for 2022 Professional Line package includes stone guards for the headlights, roof rack, fat off-road tires on 18-inch wheels, and mud flaps. All-terrain driving is made possible with a short wheelbase and minimum ground clearance of 9.5 inches. The standard tow hitch also comes in handy when vehicle towing capacity is 7,700 lbs.
If you’re more of a hare than a tortoise, then you’ll like the base engine in the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class 550. A twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission creates 450 pd-ft of torque and 416 hp. As noted by
Kelley Blue Book
, the AMG-tuned G 63 engine will increase performance and propel the heavy SUV from 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.
The complete redesign of the G-Class in 2019 kept the same rugged exterior but upgraded the cabin with new technology and safety features. The wood and leather interior is accented with a 64-color LED interior lighting system, heated front and rear seats, Burmester sound system, 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and separate infotainment display of the same size.
The front seats have 10-way power-adjustability. Drivers will appreciate the seat, mirror, and steering memory, in addition to tri-zone automatic climate control. The rear-seat entertainment and universal garage door opener are a nice touch. Safety is enhanced with 10 airbags, active brake assist, attention assist, adaptive cruise control, speed-limit assist, blind-spot assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and trailer-stability assist.

A price for every option

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class 550 sells for approximately $132,000, but starts at $159,000 for the G 63 model. With endless options, buyers will certainly be spending more than that! There are now 50 standard factory colors to choose from, all hand painted, with separate price tags. $12,200 spent on the Exclusive Interior Package Plus will upgrade the leather seats to a diamond pattern.
You can even pay more to go faster. Maximum speed on the G 63 can be raised from 137 mph to 149 mph, for an additional $2,200. Other options include ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and Nappa leather upholstery.

The competition

Reviewers were disappointed not to find the new MBUX system in the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class yet, since the COMAND touchpad control system can be challenging to use while driving. Handling is also heavier at low speeds than most other vehicles in its class, as it operates more like a truck.
As articulated by
MotorTrend
, nobody buys a G-Class for its fuel economy. The best it gets is 19 mpg. While an upcoming zero-emissions version was announced in 2021, there is still no sign of an electric option for this model.
Aside from the rear-mounted spare wheel, the square body of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class has good visibility with ample head and legroom. Some wind noise in the cabin is a drawback, but cargo capacity beats the Bentley Bentayga with 68.6 cubic feet when the second row is folded down.
