Though packed with power and impressive performance, not everyone is convinced this Goliath is the best bang for your buck. What are consumers excited about with the 2022 Suburban? And why are others holding back?

A reimagined, functional Suburban

We wouldn’t quite call it luxury, but it can crank up to 420 hp V8 and features a torque-rich diesel six-cylinder. The 2022 Suburban is an awesome SUV with lane-keeping assist, rear parking sensors, and an optional exterior camera system that can come in handy when trailering.
Car and Driver
tells us, “A 355 hp 5.3-liter V8 is the default engine on all but the top-tier High Country model. It gets a standard 420-hp 6.2-liter V8, but it also can be equipped with the optional diesel 3.0-liter six-cylinder.” However, it's a quiet ride, and the suspension takes bumps like a champ.
The LS model starts just under $55,000 and at the top of the line, the High Country comes in a little under $75,000. If 22-inch wheels and a blacked-out exterior trim sound appealing, the sporty RST may be calling your name. It’s got a power-operated liftgate, Bose stereo, and heated front seats with memory settings.
The 2022 Suburban has a good amount of cargo and passenger space, especially when compared to its earlier iterations. Expanding by 23 cubic feet (145 total) the cargo provides tons of legroom and gives us plenty of variety for adjusting the seats. Also a “12.3 digital gauge cluster comes standard starting on the LT model,” according to Car and Driver.
It’s got great safety features like blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and LATCH car seat anchors in the second row (unfortunately, not in the third). You can sit pretty knowing this massive vehicle received a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.

Is the 2022 Suburban worth the money?

At only 16 mpg, the fuel economy hasn’t improved much from previous generations. It takes a whole 7.6 seconds to ramp up from zero to 60 mph, but due to its size, that sounds about right.
According to Car and Driver, the “Suburban is most efficient when equipped with the available diesel engine, with ratings of 21 mpg city and 27 highway.” Unfortunately, the LS and LT versions feel less connected to the road and you’ll experience some body roll when taking corners. If you want a quicker steering response, you’ll need to look into the Premier model.
Consumer Reports
found the push-button gear selector tricky to operate without directly looking at it. It also found the tall hood of the 2022 Suburban concerning. This has the potential to compromise forward visibility, which can make it hard to see pedestrians and small dogs in the city.
The braking performance is subpar at best, taking longer than we’d want when coming to a stop on wet or dry terrain. You’ll also need to get used to the extra oomph required to operate this machine on the daily.
