The second-most affordable SUV within the Range Rover family, the Velar offers plenty of style for under $60,000.
Land Rover brought some significant changes to the Velar in 2021. While the engine for the base model remained unchanged, Car and Driver
says the upgraded V6 powertrain was swapped out for an inline-six hybrid system. A new infotainment system, active noise cancellation, and the option of an air filtration system for the cabin were also added to the SUV.
The 2022 Range Rover Velar did not receive the same treatment. Some upgrades like heated seats and basic driver-assist features became standard, increasing the base price by about $1,000, but the Velar was otherwise left untouched.
How does the Range Rover Velar stack up to its siblings?
Not all Range Rovers are made equal, and the difference in price from one to the other indicates just how different they are. For the 2022 lineup, base models cost between $45,750 (for the Evoque) and over $95,000 (for the O.G. Range Rover).
Like all Land Rovers, each Range Rover is praised for its style. Body sizes increase with each model, but the real money-making change comes in the form of powertrains.
While the base engine in the Evoque, for example, offers similar power and dexterity to the Velar, its hybrid upgrade is two cylinders short of the more valuable family member.
Jump past the Velar to the Range Rover Sport, and the inline-six hybrid option becomes standard equipment, with an available tuning to produce 395 hp.
The Sport Supercharged version drops a V8 engine offering up to 575 hp in the same body as the Sport, while the premium Range Rover can come with an in-line six or the V8, tuned to a slightly less-aggressive 523 hp, along with all the bells and whistles that make it worth $95,000.
