The 2020 BMW M8 Was Big on Power But Small on Fuel Economy

The 2020 BMW M8 offers prestigious craftsmanship and excellent driver assistance technology. Its fuel efficiency, however, requires quite a compromise.

The BMW 8 Series inspired a line of M8 cruisers with track-focused capabilities and an emphasis on
luxury
living. The 2020 BMW M8 is a beast on the track, yet carefully crafted for the everyday driver.
However, we can’t say we’re impressed with BMW’s miles per gallon on this high-performance version. Are these sporty roadsters worth the money spent on gas?

The 2020 BMW M8 offers powerful performance

This powerhouse series is available as a convertible, coupe, or four-door gran coupe. The specialized all-wheel-drive system pairs with a strong twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 and features a rear-drive-only mode.
According to
Car and Driver’s
review, “The M8 Competition model further maximizes performance with added horsepower, an enhanced chassis, and other bespoke bits.” It’s true. The models boast responsive handling up to 617 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.
They’re a fan of the M8 Competition coupe over the convertible, as it’s better suited for the track, and comes with plenty of go-fast goodies. They also love that compared to the M8, “the Comp models receive a firmer suspension, sportier-sounding exhaust system, unique ‘Track’ drive mode, and special wheels.”
With a significantly higher price tag than the BMW M5, the 2020 BMW M8 Competition can go from 0-60 in about three seconds. You control how you want the engine, chassis, and suspension to feel by configuring your own sport mode between M1 and M2.
The modes are activated through red tabs on the steering wheel. If you hold down the M mode button on the center console for three seconds (on the M8 Competition Coupe or M8 Competition Convertable), you’re thrust into track mode. The center screen goes dark, shuts off all infotainment, and allows the driver to focus on the road.
Another advancement is the ability to adjust brake pedal pressure between Comfort and Sport with selectable brake modes. If you turn off the stability control located in the center console, you can opt for an AWD Sport or 2WD. In sport mode, the gauge cluster changes into a racing-style display fit for challenging Lightning McQueen
As far as an imaginative design, the 2020 BMW M8 left much to be desired, according to Car and Driver. However, it does include customizable ambient lighting (including the BMW logo popping up on the headrests), a Nappa leather dashboard, and a spacious front seat experience. The back seats, not so much.

‘Top Gear’ host Chris Harris says ‘No’

MORE: The Best American Sports Cars
During the last episode of the 28th season of “Top Gear,”  the show’s editor Jack Rix asked British journalist Chris Harris his thoughts on the 2020 BMW M8 Competition. His response: “No.”
Chris said it was basically the same car as the BMW M5 Competition, but with less space. He’s not wrong. The most practical model may be the BMW M8 Gran Coupe (also the cheapest), as the other models barely allow someone to squeeze in the backseat. It may also be worth it just for the trunk space.
Realistically, most owners aren’t going to take this GT to the race track, so it does lose some points in the comfort department. How about some plush seats? Heated massage functions?
Car and Driver found the 2020 M8 Models equally fuel-inefficient, earning about 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. That’s quite a jump from BMW’s
all-electric vehicles
, which get an impressive 324 miles per charge.
So maybe this isn’t the best car to take on a cross-country road trip. Bummer.

How to insure a luxury vehicle

Not only are BMWs expensive to maintain, but they can also cost even more to insure. If you've always dreamed of owning an attention-grabbing sports car, you’ll want to look into luxury car insurance. It’s usually more expensive than
traditional insurance
, with an average of over $2,000 per year.
