Investing in a five-year-old
used car
can be a great financial decision. If you choose the right vehicle, you’ll end up getting a reliable car for a discounted price. But, the challenge is finding a used car that meets all your wants and needs.
Luckily,
Consumer Reports
has done some of the heavy lifting for drivers and named the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime one of the best used hybrids on the market. Here’s why.

How does Consumer Reports choose the best used hybrids?

According to Consumer Reports, five years is the sweet spot for used cars. At the five-year mark, cars have depreciated in value enough to make them a good price, but are still recent enough to have good performance, technology, and fuel economy.
Because of that, the ranking and review source compiled a list of the most fuel-efficient, used hybrid sedans and hatchbacks.
All the vehicles on the list were rated highly when they first hit the roads in 2017, plus they have great reliability and owner satisfaction ratings, indicating they stand the test of time.
Additionally, since the list the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime ranked on was specific to hybrid cars, each vehicle was required to have a Consumer Reports Green Choice Award, which highlights vehicles that have the cleanest emissions.

Why did the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime make the list?

The 2017 Toyota Prius Prime made Consumer Reports' list of used hybrid sedans and hatchbacks with the best fuel economy because, in a nutshell, it’s a great hybrid car.
Obviously, the 2017 Prius Prime has to have great fuel economy to make the list. The car is rated five out of five for its fuel economy, which is 69mpg overall, 56mpg in the city, and 81mpg on the highway. Not to mention, annual fuel costs for the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime are just $865.
This car was also ranked highly due to its perfect five out of five predicted reliability score, as well as its near-perfect four out of five predicted owner satisfaction.
It’s an eco-friendly car that rates a perfect ten out of ten in greenhouse gas emissions, and a seven out of ten for smog rating. Comfort is also rated highly, particularly in the ride, noise, driving position, and front seat comfort categories.
The 2017 Toyota Prius Prime falls short in acceleration, taking 10.8 seconds to get from 0 to 60mph. Plus, rear seat comfort and cargo space aren’t the best. But, these are small flaws that shouldn’t impact you too much if the intended purpose of the car is everyday driving.

What other cars ranked on the list with the 2017 Prius Prime?

In addition to the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime, a number of other 2017 vehicles met the qualifications necessary to make Consumer Reports’ list, although none came close to the Prius Prime’s fantastic fuel economy.
The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq with an overall fuel economy of 51mpg ranked, but it lacked predicted owner satisfaction.
There were also a few other Toyota vehicles, like the 2017 Prius with an overall fuel economy of 53mpg, the Toyota Prius C with 52mpg, and the Toyota Prius V with 40mpg.
Plus, the 2017 Kia Niro was on the list with an overall fuel economy of 46mpg, and solid predicted owner satisfaction.
