background
In 1995, Chevrolet ended the
Corvette
ZR-1 due to its poor performance in the market. The carmaker then decided to revive the most famous Corvette, the 1963 Grand Sport, which was a racing model. This model was to be released as an entirely new Corvette model for 1996.
The
1996 Corvette
was different from the C4 models that had been on the market since 1984. It also had many firsts, and many of the features turned up in the newer versions of the Corvette line. Let's look at some of the salient and outstanding features of the model.

The 1996 Corvette engine's performance

According to
Hot Cars
, the 1996 Corvette was built on a high-performance variant of the LT1 engine, also called the LT4. This drivetrain features lighter intake valves, larger fuel injectors, and a performance crankshaft. The engine produced 330 horsepower and around 340 lb-ft of torque.
Chevrolet mated the engine with a ZF six-speed manual transmission that offers a smooth ride by powering the rear wheels.
Due to its sporty profile like the
2019 Grand Sport,
it can accelerate from rest to 60 mph in just about 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 168 mph; other versions were at par with earlier
C4 speeds.

The 1996 Corvette also has a stopping distance of 36 meters at a speed of 60 mph, which is also impressive.

The interior and exterior design of the 1996 Corvette

Several corvette models were released in 1996, as explained by
Motor Trend
: the Z16 (Grand Sport), a convertible, and the LT4. The Grand Sport came in both coupe and convertible versions. The Z16 had 1,000 cars on the market while the LT4, also called the Collector Edition, had 5,412 units.
Both the coupe and the convertible had two doors. However, the coupe version also had the rear wheels fitted under molded fender flares. Both models had spokes wheels from the now-defunct ZR-1, but their wheels had a greater offset.
Car owners also chose to add branded Corvette gloss black brake calipers. The 1996 Corvette has a low ground clearance of 4.2 inches and a curb weight of 3350 lbs.
Owners chose black or a mix of Torch Red and black leather seats for the interior, with branding at the headrest. The cabin looked sporty, with sculptured edges and a matte finish. As for the entertainment, users got a cassette and CD player along with a Delco-Bose stereo system.

What was the price of the 1996 Corvette?

According to
Car and Driver
, the base convertible version of the 1996 Corvette was the more expensive of the two, with the base Sport Coupe selling at $37,225. The Grand Sport package had both a coupe and a convertible, with the coupe going for an extra $3,250 and $2,880 for the convertible.
Other optional features came at an added price, such as the power passenger and driver seats that went for $305 each and sport seats that went for $625.
However, these features were standard with the Grand Sport package. Over the years, the price of a used 1996 Corvette has varied, depending mainly on the maintenance levels.
