The 1984 Corvette Is Totally Tubular

The 1984 Corvette may not be the best Corvette ever made, but it certainly is close. Take a look to see why the ‘84 Corvette was one for the books.

The eighties were a decade that will never be forgotten, thanks to the music, the movies, and, of course, the cars. The 1984
Chevrolet
Corvette is an excellent example for its time. Not only has it found a well-deserved place amongst the top Corvettes of all time, but it still has a place in the hearts of those who owned one, and here's why.

The 1984 Corvette was a powerhouse

The '84 Corvette was quite the piece of machinery in its day. It came equipped with a pushrod 16-valve V8 engine which generates 205 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque, and either a 4-speed automatic transmission or an optional 4-speed manual transmission. It was based largely off of the Porsche 928, but it still maintained that distinctly Corvette feel. The two-seater sports car with a removable, one-piece roof panel and a hatchback was a blast to drive.
According to
Car and Driver
, "The roadholding on this new machine is so advanced that we recorded the highest skidpad lateral acceleration—0.90 g—ever observed with a conventional automobile by this staff. That figure practically trivializes the previous high-water marks, in the 0.82-g range, generated by such exotics as the Porsche 928 and assorted Ferraris."
The '84 Corvette can go from zero to 60 in 6.7 seconds, as well as reach 100 mph in 27.2 seconds. Its top speed is 138 mph, and it takes 173 ft to go from 70 mph to zero when braking. The gas mileage ranged from 16 city, 28 highway, and 20 mpg combined.

How has the price changed over the years?

Back when the '84 Corvette was first released, you could purchase it for a mere $28,000. That was quite a bit of money back then, but considering that the 2022 Chevy Corvette Stingray starts at $62,195, that was a real bargain.
If you want a 1984 Corvette,
Classic Cars
states that the price can range anywhere from $6,000 to $31,000 depending on the condition of the car. Many have had the interiors redone so you aren't getting a vehicle with seats that are 38 years old, but the change in price may leave you with sticker shock once you realize your Corvette may be worth more than you thought.

Time has been kind to the 1984 Corvette

Given that the first Chevy Corvette rolled off production floors back in 1953, there have been 69 model years of Corvettes to hit the roadways. There have been some absolute greats throughout the years, but it’s not too hard to ponder where exactly the 1984 model falls.
According to
Edmunds
, it ranks as number seven out of the ten greatest Corvettes of all time. That's extremely impressive, considering that some of the rivals it had to beat out included the much loved 1970 Corvette LT-1 and the automobile that started it all, the 1953 model.
Edmunds goes so far as to credit the 1984 Corvette with saving the model from becoming bland and reminding the masses just what a cool car the Corvette really is.
