How much you save with the Washington electric vehicle incentive

In Washington, many of the state incentives only apply to commercial companies. But electric vehicles and Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (ESVE) purchased after August 1, 2019 are eligible for a
sales and use tax exemption
. The amount you save will depend on the cost of your vehicle.
Electric vehicles (and all vehicles using alternative fuels) are also exempt from Washington’s emissions inspection.

How to get the Washington electric vehicle incentive

If you’re buying a vehicle from a dealership, you don’t need to report the exemption.
If you’re buying a used vehicle, you can give the
Buyer’s Retail Sales Tax Exemption Certificate
to the seller to complete. 
The seller will report the exempt sale by taking a sales of zero-emissions buses, batteries, fuel cells, and infrastructure for electric vehicles deduction from retail sales tax.

Eligibility criteria

The exemption applies to the sales price or fair market value when you purchase or lease a passenger car, light-duty truck, or medium-duty passenger vehicle powered by a clean alternative fuel or that can travel at least 30 miles using only battery power.
The vehicle must be $45,000 or less if new and $30,000 or less if used and must be on the state’s list of
qualifying vehicles
The exemption is in effect until July 31, 2025.
