The most common 2011 Jeep Compass problems

Most vehicles start to have problems when they hit the 100,000-mile mark—and if you’re a good driver who takes care of your vehicle, it can last for much longer. But some problems are likely to arise no matter how careful you are.
The 2011 Jeep Compass is no different. One of the most frequently reported issues with this vehicle involved the powertrain. Drivers consistently said that their Jeeps would come to a stop and wouldn’t move despite them stepping on the gas. Mechanics have pointed the finger at the automatic transmission as a cause of the problems.
A quick (general) explanation—your powertrain is made up of an engine, transmission, and axles. Each of these components needs to work seamlessly or you could be at risk of experiencing a breakdown. Without a working transmission, you simply won’t be going anywhere.
This was the most common complaint by 2011 Jeep Compass drivers, making up about a fifth of the 167 reported complaints—the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) received 35 reports about the 2011 Compass powertrain.
Other common problems include:
  • Steering wheels locking up
  • Engine losing propulsion
  • Transmission oil light coming on when driving at high speeds
  • Overheating CVT transmission at high speeds, during long trips, or in high temperatures
  • Water leaks from the roof
  • Loss of electrical power to the exterior and interior lights
Some of these problems can cause major issues in high-speed traffic and can develop into serious mechanical failures with expensive repair costs.
According to the NHTSA, there have been three formal recalls for the 2011 Jeep Compass. The most recent recalls, in 2013 and 2016, were related to airbags and seat belt pretensioners. The 2016 recalls were for models that had a malfunctioning component that prevented the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners from deploying during a crash.
The 2013 recall was also for a software issue that likely caused delayed deployment or no deployment of airbags. The 2011 recall dealt with a steering column issue where a missing component affected the frontal impact safety system.
