In Tennessee, certain counties require you to get an emissions inspection when you renew your vehicle registration, as long as your vehicle is not exempt. Mandatory emissions inspections will end in early 2022 for all counties except Davidson County.
In 1977, an amendment to the Clean Air Act enhanced federal standards for air quality in the U.S. To comply with those standards, drivers in dense metropolitan areas often must undergo regular vehicle emissions inspections.
These regulations vary by state, and certain drivers and vehicles may be exempt.
