background
To replace a car title in South Carolina, you’ll need a completed Title Application (Form 400), a valid form of photo ID, and payment for the $15 replacement fee.
If your car’s title has been damaged or lost, you’ll need to replace it as soon as possible. Your title is proof that you are the rightful owner of your vehicle. Without the title, it won’t be possible to transfer ownership of the car in cases of selling it or re-titling it in another state.
Because your title is so important, you’ll want the replacement process to go as smoothly as possible. Since every state has its own process for replacing a title, you must understand your state’s requirements. That’s why the

What happens if you have a lien?

It’s important to note that if you have a lien on your vehicle, the South Carolina DMV will send the replacement title to the lienholder—not you. If you’re applying for a new title, and there’s an existing lien, a copy will be sent to both you and the lienholder.
If you need the lien released, your lienholder can do so electronically if there is already an electronic copy of the title. There are two ways to do so:
