What you need to sell a car in Idaho

To sell your car in a private sale in

, you will need to follow these steps:
  • Fill out a Bill of Sale
  • Transfer the title to the new owner
  • File a Release of Liability (ROL) form
  • Remove the license plates from the vehicle before handing it over to the new owner

Documenting the sale

Record your vehicle transaction by filling out a Bill of Sale, which can be downloaded from the
Idaho Transportation Department website
. You will need to provide the following:
  • Vehicle information (include make, model, year, and VIN)
  • Seller’s name, address, and contact information
  • Buyer’s name, address, and contact information
  • Sale price

  • Lienholder information (if applicable)

Signing the title over

To officially transfer ownership of your vehicle, you will need to transfer the title to the buyer. Fill out the following information on the title:
  • Odometer reading
  • Buyer’s name and signature
  • Seller’s name and signature
The buyer can then take this title, along with other necessary documents, to the county assessor’s motor vehicle office.

Reporting the sale

Within five days of selling your car, you will need to report the sale by filling out a Release of Liability (ROL) form. This form is located at the bottom of the certificate of title. You can tear it off and give the hard copy to the Idaho Transportation Department or file the form online, through the
