What you need to sell a car in Hawaii

In order to sell a car in

, start off by gathering the following documents:
  • State of Hawaii Inspection Certificate
  • Original Certificate of Title
  • A Notice of Transfer form
  • Certificate of Registration
You will need to send the Notice of Transfer form to your county’s motor vehicle registration office and give the inspection certificate, title, and registration certificate to the buyer.

Getting a pre-sale inspection

In Hawaii, all registered vehicles over two years old are required to get annual safety inspections. You will need to give the car’s buyer your up-to-date State of Hawaii Inspection Certificate, so make sure that you haven’t missed your most recent inspection.

Signing the title over

To transfer ownership to the buyer, you will need to sign Section A on the front of your Certificate of Title. If the vehicle is jointly owned, both parties will need to sign and date this section. In the event that your vehicle still has a lien, the lienholder will need to fill out Section B on the other side of the title.
If your car is under ten years old, you will also need to record the odometer reading on the title.
Once you’ve signed the title over, the buyer can apply for a new title and register the car in their own name at the motor vehicle registration office.

Reporting the sale

After you sell your car, you have 10 days to send a Notice of Transfer form to the County Motor Vehicle & Licensing Office in the county where you originally registered the vehicle. 
The Notice of Transfer form is located at the top of the Certificate of Title. You can also download this form from your county motor vehicle registration office’s website.
You will need to provide the following information:
  • Name and address of the new owner
  • License number
  • Make and model
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • Sale date
