When selling a car in Alaska, you’ll need to fill out and sign your title and disclose the odometer reading to the buyer before notifying the DMV of the transfer of ownership.
Selling a car privately can seem like a daunting thing to do—but it’s pretty easy if you understand the steps that you’ll need to take. Each state has its own requirements and rules to ensure legal transfer of ownership.
What you need to sell a car in Alaska
Getting a pre-sale inspection
Normally, Alaska does not require any pre-sale inspections of a vehicle being sold. However, if you don’t have the title or the Manufacturers’ Certificate of Origin (MCO), a state vehicle inspector may need to complete an inspection.
When you have a buyer, you’ll fill out a Bill of Sale, which is required to register the vehicle. You’ll also need to disclose the vehicle’s odometer reading and provide proof of previous registration.
Complete a blank Bill of Sale by filling out the following information:
When transferring the title over for the vehicle you are selling, complete and sign the Assignment of Vehicle Title and give the original title to the buyer.
You’ll need to certify the odometer reading (if the vehicle is less than 10 years old) and then sign the reassignment portion of the title to release interest in the vehicle to the buyer.
The seller must report the transfer or assignment of ownership title to Alaska’s DMV after a sale has been agreed upon. Send the Notice of Vehicle Sale for Transfer (attached at bottom of the original title) to the DMV as soon as possible.
