To replace a car title in
Oregon
, you need to fill out an Application for Replacement Title, get it signed by all owners that the DMV has on record, present a valid ID, and pay the appropriate title fee.
A title is one of the most important documents you need to have for your car. Without the car’s title, there’s no legal proof as to who the rightful owner is, and it will be impossible to sell the car or move it out of state. If your title has been lost or damaged, you need to start the process to replace it as soon as possible.
Luckily,
Jerry
has put together a guide to help you through Oregon’s car title replacement process.

What you’ll need to replace a title in Oregon

Oregon is one of the easiest states in which to replace a title, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need to prepare before applying.
Before applying for a replacement title, you’ll need:
  • Valid ID
  • The signatures of all listed owners of the vehicle
  • Contact your local DMV office to ensure you know which signatures you’ll need. They may require signatures from former lienholders, even if the lien has since been paid off.
  • Payment for the appropriate title fee

How to apply for a replacement title in Oregon

Applying in person

To avoid long lines and wait times, it’s best to schedule an appointment with your local DMV before applying for a replacement title. Scheduling in advance also gives you the chance to double-check that you have all the signatures you’ll need to successfully apply.
On the day of the appointment, you’ll need to bring:
  • A filled out Application for Replacement Title, complete with signatures from all owners on file
  • A valid form of ID (this can be your driver’s license)
  • Payment for the appropriate title fee
If you need to register your vehicle, you can apply for registration during your appointment as well. Just be sure to have all the necessary documents ready to avoid having to make a separate appointment.

Applying by mail

If you’re looking to avoid the DMV altogether, mailing in your application is another option available.
The process is similar to applying in person, so you’ll need much of the same:
  • A filled out Application for Replacement Title, complete with signatures from all owners on file
  • Payment for the appropriate title fee
  • Copies of all documents you plan on mailing out (for your records)
Once you have everything in hand, you’ll mail your application to:

The fee you’ll need to pay to replace your title depends on a combination of the year of your car, the mileage it gets, and whether or not it’s electric.
Here’s a handy guide for determining the appropriate fee for replacing your car title:
  • The vehicle year is 1999 or older: $98
  • The vehicle year is 2000 or newer
  • The combined mpg is 0-19: $98
  • The combined mpg is 20-39: $103
  • The combined mpg is 40+: $113
  • The vehicle is electric: $187

How long does it take to get a replacement title in Oregon?

After submitting your application, you’ll receive your replacement title in the mail. Expect a wait time of two to four weeks for your new title to arrive.
If you need your title by a certain date—like if you’re selling your car or moving it to another state—be sure to submit your application as soon as possible.

When do you need to replace your car title?

The title is one of the most important documents you can have for your car. A title will need to be replaced if it is:
