In North Dakota, no vehicle inspections are required, except for farm vehicles and commercial trucks.

Drivers aren’t required to have car inspections for any reason in North Dakota—with a few exceptions. Farm vehicles and commercial trucks that don’t cross state lines need to have annual inspections, but there are few penalties in place for failing to meet the requirement.
Truck driver or not, it might be a good idea to get your vehicle inspected regularly, at least for your own peace of mind!
Here’s a rundown on vehicle inspection laws in North Dakota, and why it might be a good idea to have your car checked out—with a little help from the

What are the vehicle inspection requirements in North Dakota?

For the most part, North Dakota does not mandate that vehicles complete emissions, VIN, or safety inspections.
But that doesn’t mean you should avoid getting one. If you’re purchasing a second-hand vehicle, it might be a good idea to have your car checked out to confirm that everything is running smoothly. It’s vital that you get a qualified mechanic who you trust to complete the inspection properly.
You should also note that if you move to another state from North Dakota, an emissions test might be required. A VIN check will almost certainly be run when you register your car, too.

Exceptions to North Dakota vehicle inspection requirements

Although North Dakota’s vehicle inspection rules are relatively lax, there are a few exceptions. Notably, commercial vehicles weighing more than 26,000 pounds need to be inspected annually. However, that requirement is nullified if the commercial vehicle regularly crosses state lines.
The same rules apply to farm and ranch vehicles, such as ATVs and farm trucks.
That being said, the regulations are rather loose, and there aren’t any clearly outlined penalties for failing to meet these requirements. Still, if you own one of these vehicle types, a yearly inspection is a smart move.
