In New Mexico, you must complete and pass an emissions inspection every two years if your vehicle is registered or commuting in Bernalillo County.
The 1977 amendment to the Clean Air Act was made to protect the air quality in every state. Each state was required to implement vehicle emissions inspection programs in metropolitan areas where the air quality was below federal standards. The specific requirements are dependent on the state, your vehicle, and your zip code.
Keeping your vehicle compliant is important so the car insurance comparison and broker app Jerry has consolidated all the information needed for car inspections in New Mexico.

What are the vehicle inspection requirements in New Mexico?

When you register a vehicle or commute for 60 or more days in Bernalillo County, you are required to complete and pass an annual emissions inspection. This applies to all vehicles more than four years old.

Vehicles that don’t pass the emissions inspection need to be repaired and retested. Repairs can be done at the repair station where they got tested or you can go to another location. The New Mexico MVD requires retests to be done at the MVD’s vehicle pollution management headquarters, but there is no cost to do so.
Eligible residents can also get an allowance from Bernalillo County for repair costs and refunding costs of improperly tested vehicles.

New residents who have established their residency must have their vehicle pass the emissions test. They must also have their VIN inspected before they can register the vehicle. You should call the MVD ahead of time to check if the testing location does VIN inspections, as some facilities do not do so.
Fees for the inspection are usually between $15 and $25 plus tax.
