    What is a bill of sale?

    A bill of sale for a car is essentially a receipt for the private sale of the vehicle. In general, it contains information about the car being sold. A bill of sale also includes identifying information about the buyer and seller, along with their signatures.
    A bill of sale does not legally transfer ownership of the car—only a title transfer can do that. The certificate of title is the legal document that certifies a car’s ownership. Instead, a bill of sale outlines the terms of your agreement with the other party in a private vehicle sale.

    Is a bill of sale required in New Hampshire?

    A bill of sale is required only when a car is considered title exempt. New Hampshire does not title motor vehicles that have a model year of 1999 or older (but there are some exceptions to this).

    What is required in a New Hampshire bill of sale?

    If you are buying or selling an exempt vehicle in the state of New Hampshire, you will create your own bill of sale. 
    A Bill of Sale for a motor vehicle must include the following information:
    • The date of the sale.
    • A detailed description of the vehicle, including:
      • Make
      • Model
      • Color
      • Vehicle identification number
      • Model year
      • Year of manufacture
      • Type of body
      • Number of cylinders
    • Name, signature, and legal address (no PO Box) of the purchaser.
    • Name, signature, and legal address (no PO Box) of seller.
    Consider having the bill of sale (and copies) notarized for another layer of protection.
    For most private party vehicle sales in New Hampshire, a bill of sale is not technically required. However, it’s usually a good idea to fill out a bill of sale when you buy or sell a vehicle, since the document acts as proof of the transaction and the date of transfer.

    What should I do after I get a bill of sale?

    After you get a bill of sale for a car, you must complete a title transfer to legally certify the change of ownership. Remember, your bill of sale is a receipt—it does not officially transfer ownership of the car to the new owner. 
    In New Hampshire, the seller does not have to surrender the plates of the sold vehicle to the DMV and may keep the plates or transfer them to a new vehicle. If you have issued a bill of sale, make sure to keep a copy of the bill of sale for your records. This protects you from possible legal consequences down the road.
