Replacing your lost or damaged title in
Nevada
requires you to fill out an application and provide some personal and vehicle information, including the VIN. You’ll need to submit this information, along with the $20 fee, to the Nevada DMV.
A car title denotes legal ownership of the vehicle. You are required to hold a title in the state in which you reside—so if you move, you’ll need to transfer the title. However, if you can’t find your title, or if it’s damaged, you can apply for a replacement title.
It’s a pretty easy process to replace your title, but it’s slightly different in every state. It’s crucial that you understand the procedure so you remain in accordance with your state’s law.

What you’ll need to get a replacement title in Nevada

To start the process of getting a replacement title in Nevada, collect all the information and paperwork you need to fill out the application. This should include:
  • The full legal name, drivers license number, and address of the applicant
  • The full information for the lienholder (if applicable)
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Car’s make, model, and license plate number
  • Fee
The application for duplicate title form will need to be notarized
If you took out a lien on the vehicle and you have satisfied the conditions of the lien, you’ll need to submit a notarized
Lien Release (VP 186) form
. If it is an electronic title, the lienholder will need to electronically release the lien, and the title will be mailed to the registered owner.
To mail a duplicate title out of state, you’ll need to submit a written statement including a description of the vehicle, the VIN, year, and make. This statement must be issued by the other state’s title issuing agency, and they must assert that the Nevada title has not been surrendered to them.

When do you need a replacement title?

Your car title is an incredibly important document as it legally certifies ownership of the vehicle. The document contains vehicle information (make, model, VIN) and information about the owner (including ID information and address).
If you move to a new state or are planning to sell your vehicle, the title is necessary for completing the transfer of ownership or registering your vehicle in a new state. A title will need to be replaced if you cannot find it or if it is damaged.
Other reasons you may need a replacement title include:
  • Lost title
  • Stolen title
  • Illegible title
  • Mutilated or damaged title
  • Altered title
  • Never received the title from the DMV
If the original title is in your possession and not damaged beyond repair, you cannot apply for a replacement title as there cannot be more than one title for a vehicle.
