The Missouri window tint law allows for 35% Visible Light Transmission (VLT) on the front driver and passenger side windows. No tinting is allowed on the windshield below the manufacturer’s AS-1 line.
Window tinting offers privacy, diminishes glare, and reduces incoming sunlight and heat. It can also add to your car’s aesthetic. Tinting can keep your car looking cool and feeling comfortable all year round.
Laws for window tinting vary from state to state. Here, the car insurance comparison and broker app Jerry breaks down the details so you can be compliant with window tint laws in Missouri.

What is the visible light transmission percentage?

The visible light transmission (VLT) percentage refers to how much light passes—or transmits—through a window.
A high VLT allows more light through a window. For example, in Iowa, the VLT is 70%. In Missouri, however, the legal VLT is 35%, allowing front side windows to be darker than in Iowa.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍

Medical exemptions

Certain individuals may qualify for darker window tints because of medical reasons. The department of public safety will issue a permit to operate a vehicle with a lower VLT. These medical exemptions are given to individuals with a doctor’s prescription.
In addition, the permit allows a close relative living in the same household to drive the darker-tint vehicle. This includes a parent, child, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, or spouse.

Penalties for violating the window tint law

If you violate the Missouri window tint law, you can be charged with a Class C misdemeanor. While this may sound like a minor infraction, you could receive 15 days in jail or a fine of up to $750.
