Michigan
utility companies offer discounts for customers who install level 2 chargers for their electric vehicles and time-of-use (TOU) savings for charging during off-peak hours.
In the United States today, petroleum accounts for 90% of the energy consumed in the transportation sector. Transportation itself is the nation’s leading source of greenhouse gas emissions.
Electric vehicles (EVs) can help reduce dependency on petroleum and contribute to lower CO2 and other emissions. In an effort to encourage more drivers to choose them, many states offer rebates and other incentives for purchasing or leasing EVs.

How much can I save with the Michigan electric vehicle incentive?

In Michigan, the electric vehicle incentive can save you $500 or $1,000 on the purchase of a level 2 electric vehicle charger (EVSE) if you’re a customer with a
participating utility provider
.
Here are the details:
  • DTE Energy customers can receive a
    $500 rebate
for the purchase of a level 2 charger and discounted TOU charging rates for plugging in when electricity is in lower demand.
  • Consumers Energy
customers also receive a $500 rebate for purchasing a level 2 charger and can opt into TOU rates.
  • The
Lansing Board of Water and Light
(LBWL) offers a $1,000 rebate for installing a level 2 charger plus a TOU program.
You must be a customer to apply, so you are only eligible for one rebate.

How to get Michigan electric vehicle incentive

Since the
Michigan
incentives apply to purchasing a charger rather than the EV itself, drivers of any type of BEV, FCEV, or PHEV are eligible to apply.
To claim your incentive you must:
  • Be a Michigan resident living in a single-family or multi-family residence of four families or less
  • Be a customer of the utility to which you are applying
  • Buy and install a level 2 charger (separately metered if in a multi-family dwelling)
  • Apply for the EV Charger rebate on the utility’s website and provide any necessary supporting documentation
  • Contact your provider to enroll in EV Charger TOU rating, if applicable—note that with Consumers, you must own the EV to receive TOU rating
You must have purchased your charger on or after May 2019 and agree to remain on the TOU billing policy for at least 12 months.
