If your Maryland car title has been lost or damaged, you can apply for a replacement title by filling out an application and submitting it to the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) for a fee of $20.
A car title is proof of legal ownership. It contains general information such as the vehicle identification number (VIN) and the owner’s name and address. If it gets misplaced or becomes too damaged to use, you can apply for a replacement title.
Requesting a duplicate title is not complicated, but the procedure varies from state to state. To understand your state’s rules, car insurance broker super app Jerry has created a step-by-step guide to getting a replacement title in Maryland.

What you’ll need to get a replacement title in Maryland

In order to request a replacement title in Maryland, you’ll be required to provide the following information:
  • Your driver’s license or a valid photo ID (you must submit a photocopy of your ID when applying at a full-service MVA branch or tag and title service)
  • License plate number
  • Current Maryland title number (this information can be found on your registration)
  • Your vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • The year, make, and model of your car
If there is a lien on your vehicle, enter the information of the secured party (for example, the bank that is financing your car loan) on the application.

How to apply for a replacement title in Maryland

You can apply for a duplicate title at the following places:
  • At a kiosk located at an MVA full or express office
  • At a tag and title service licensed by the MVA
  • At a full-service MVA branch
The replacement title can be mailed to an alternate address at the owner’s request unless it’s for a company-owned vehicle or you submit the application in person at a full-service MVA branch—they will only mail the title to the address they have on file for you.
Regardless of where you go to request a replacement title, you will need to do the following:
  • Complete the Application for Duplicate Certificate of Title
  • Pay the $20 processing fee
If you are requesting a duplicate title and one or more of the vehicle owners is deceased, you will also need to provide a letter of administration or death certificate (if you co-own the vehicle) to verify your authorization to obtain the title.

How long does it take to receive a replacement title in Maryland?

Whether you order your replacement title online or in person, you will receive your duplicate title in the mail. You can expect to get the new title in 7-10 business days

When do you need to replace your title?

You need a car title to prove or transfer ownership of a vehicle. If you move to another state or sell your car, the title must be transferred to the new jurisdiction or owner—that’s why the title is one of the most important documents associated with your vehicle.
You must apply for a replacement title if your title is:
  • Misplaced
  • Stolen
  • Damaged or mutilated (include the damaged title with the application form)
  • Illegible
  • Altered
  • Never received from the DMV
Key takeaway: Take good care of your title! Keep it in a safe place you can access easily.
