In Maryland, several energy companies offer a $300 rebate for individuals who install a qualifying level 2 charger for their electric vehicle (EV).
A whopping 90% of the energy consumed from transportation in the US comes from petroleum. And at 29%, the transportation sector is the biggest contributor to national greenhouse gas emissions.
In response to this situation, many states have begun to offer incentives for purchasing EVs, often in the form of rebates. These incentives help make electric vehicles accessible to more people.
Offers vary between states, so the car insurance comparison and broker app Jerry has compiled a guide to Maryland electric vehicle incentives.
How much can I save with the Maryland electric vehicle incentive?
The Maryland electric vehicle incentive EVsmart can help you to save $300 on your electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle expenses.
Utility companies Pepco, Potomac Edison, Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), and Delmarva Power have each partnered with the state government to offer a $300 rebate for purchasing and installing an approved level 2 smart charger at home.
Level 2 chargers use a 240-volt power source and charge your EV in a fraction of the time, making them more practical and efficient than level 1 chargers.
TOU charging benefits
Beyond the $300 rebate, the companies also offer time-of-use (TOU) pricing for your charger, which allows you to pay a tiered rate depending on what time you charge your vehicle. Charging during "off-peak hours" when there is less demand for electricity will get you a lower rate.
- BGE and Delmarva Power offer TOU pricing for your whole house. They also have a separate EV charger incentive for owners of multi-family properties.
- Potomac’s EV Driven Off-Peak rewards program earns you two cents per kW of electricity consumed when charging during off-peak hours.
How to get Maryland electric vehicle incentive
You can get one EV charger rebate from one of the utility providers. To receive your $300 rebate you must:
- Be a resident of Maryland
- Drive an EV
- Have purchased and installed a qualifying level 2 charger after July 1, 2019
- Be a customer of the utility whose rebate you are applying for
- Fill out the application found on the utility website (look for "PIV Managed Charger Program" or "residential rebate")
- Provide any supporting documentation
The company will contact you when your registration is complete.
If you wish to take part in TOU-rated charging, the smart charger must be fully installed and connected to Wi-Fi. Once you’re registered, simply begin charging during designated off-peak hours to take advantage of lower electricity bills and lower emissions!
These EV charger incentives are limited:
- Pepco is offering rebates to the first 100 customers
- BGE is offering rebates to the first 1,000 residential customers
Individuals who apply for the rebates after this cutoff is reached will be placed on a waitlist and may be able to receive the rebate at a later time.
See the Maryland electric vehicle incentive website to review each provider’s policy separately.
