If you need to replace a lost or damaged car title in Maine, complete the replacement title application and submit it to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) for a fee of $33. In the state of Maine, a vehicle is required to have a title if it is a 1995 model year or newer.
A certificate of title is documentation of who legally owns a vehicle. It contains the name and address of the owner, as well as the vehicle identification number (VIN). When you move to a new state or sell your car, the title’s ownership must be transferred. If it gets lost, stolen, or becomes too damaged to use, you can apply for a replacement, or duplicate title.
The process in Maine is pretty simple—but each state has its own procedure. To help you answer any questions you may have about obtaining a duplicate title,

What if there is a lien on the vehicle when I apply for a replacement title?

If there is a lien on your vehicle at the time of application, this information must be filled out in the specified fields on the MVT-8 Duplicate Title Application form. The owner must then deliver the application to the lienholder with the fee enclosed. The lienholder is responsible for delivering the application and fee to the Secretary of State.
If you previously had a lien on your vehicle but it has since been paid off, a
    Lien Release Form (MVT-12)
must be completed and submitted with the application.

    FAQs

Yes. In addition to duplicate titles, the Secretary of State in Maine also issues the following titles:
Salvage title: a certificate of salvage is issued upon the owner surrendering the certificate of title and evidence that the vehicle was declared a total loss (like after a major car wreck)
Rebuilt title: this type of title is issued when two or more vehicles with different frames are joined together—or if a salvaged vehicle has five or more component parts replaced
Warranty title: a warranty title can be issued for antique autos, horseless carriages (like a Ford Model T), or classic vehicles as long as there is proof that there are no existing liens.
