A Maine bill of sale should include the make, model, year, and VIN of the car, as well as information about the buyer and seller. The sale amount agreed on by both parties must also be listed.
A bill of sale is an essential aspect of every private car transaction. Although not required by law in every state, completing a bill of sale to record the deal is always a good idea.
The car insurance comparison and broker app Jerry has all the information you need about filling out a Maine bill of sale—whether you want an official DMV form or to make your own.

What is a bill of sale?

A car bill of sale is essentially a receipt for a private car sale. It comprises information on the vehicle, such as the VIN, the odometer reading, and the purchase price. It also shows the buyer's and seller's signatures and lists other identifying information.
Completing a bill of sale does not legally transfer the car’s ownership—only a title transfer can do that. A bill of sale describes the terms of your agreement to sell the vehicle, while a certificate of title is a legal document that verifies the car's ownership.

Is a bill of sale required in Maine?

The state of Maine requires a bill of sale for private vehicle sales.
By submitting a used car bill of sale that includes the seller’s signature, the purchaser proves that they’ve met their end of the agreement and now own the vehicle.
Possessing a copy is of equal importance to the seller, as it ensures they’re no longer liable for the vehicle in question.
If you purchase your vehicle new or used from a Maine dealer, the dealership is also required to give you an official bill of sale.

What is required in a Maine bill of sale?

The following information is required when filling out a bill of sale in Maine:
  • Date of sale
  • Name of buyer
  • Name, address, and signature of seller(s)
  • Amount of sale
  • Description of vehicle (year, model, and make)
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN)
You can find a bill of sale form on Maine’s state government website.

What should I do after I get a bill of sale?

You’ll have to complete a title transfer to legally certify the change of ownership.
If you’re selling the car, you may need to notify the DMV and turn in or transfer your previous license plates. If you’re purchasing the vehicle, you must register it with the DMV and obtain new plates.
Make a copy of the bill of sale and save it for your records. This safeguards you against any legal problems and confirms your agreement.
