You need a replacement title if yours is lost or damaged

An auto title is required to prove or transfer ownership of a vehicle. If you move to another state or
sell your car
, the title must be transferred to the new jurisdiction or owner—that’s why the title is one of the most important documents about your car.
That being said, titles go missing or get damaged. You will need to apply for a replacement title if your title is:
  • Lost
  • Stolen
  • Damaged or mutilated (attach the damaged title to the application form)
  • Illegible
  • Altered
  • Never received from the OMV
