- Check Your Paperwork
It’s important to always have car insurance when you drive. Whether you own or lease a car, you want to make sure it’s insured every time you get behind the wheel. Unless you live in New Hampshire or Virginia, it’s illegal to drive without insurance. Even if you do live in those states, it’s simply not a good idea.
But what if you don’t know whether or not you’re insured? That can happen for a variety of reasons, particularly if you’ve lost track of recent paperwork and you’re simply not sure if you have car insurance or not. It’s pretty common for drivers to ask, “How do I check if I have car insurance?”
Whatever the reason, you’ll want to find out immediately whether or not you have car insurance. Here’s how.
Check Your Paperwork
If you or anyone else has purchased insurance for your car, then there’s a good chance that there’s proof of it in the glove compartment. Open your glove compartment and see if there’s any proof of insurance in there. If there is, make sure it’s not yet expired.
If that yields no results, check your wallet for a car insurance card. Finally, see if you have any recent mail from car insurance companies, as they may be bills or account statements that will prove if you have insurance.
Check with Your Prior Insurer
If you know that you previously had car insurance, but you’re just not sure if you have it anymore, you can contact your previous insurer and ask them. Try logging into your account on their website or their smartphone app and checking the status of your policy.
If you can’t get into your account, simply call the insurer. You’ll likely need some information to verify your identity (driver’s license or social security number), as well as the vehicle identification number for your car.
Get a Car Insurance Quote
Another easy way to find out if you have auto insurance is to get a quote for car insurance. If you’re not covered, you’ll need to buy insurance, so you might as well start shopping around. If you request a quote from a car insurance company, they’ll automatically compare it to whatever your current policy is, if you have a policy. So if there’s something to compare it to, you know that your car is insured.
Call the Secretary of State
Does this method sound drastic? Fear not, it’s quite normal and totally acceptable. If you call the office of your Secretary of State, and provide your driver’s license, they’ll be able to tell you all about your current insurance situation. Insurers are required to report car insurance information to the government, so they can let you know whether or not you’re insured.
It’s important to never get behind the wheel if your car is not insured. However, sometimes you don’t know whether or not your car is covered. Make sure to go through one of these steps to find out if your car is insured before driving.
