To apply for a duplicate title in Illinois, you’ll want to make sure you have all the important and required documents needed to complete the application. This includes the following:
Photo ID and Vehicle Registration—if applying in person
Credit/debit card, check, cash, or money order for payment of $50 fee
If you have a lien, your title will be sent directly to the lienholder. You can remove the lienholder by submitting proof that the lien has been paid off in full or by a court order signed by a judge asking the state secretary to issue title to the car owner with the lien still in place.
If you purchased a vehicle without a title from an Illinois resident, you are not eligible to request a duplicate title. However, if you were the last titleholder of the car in Illinois, you are eligible to request a duplicate title by indicating on your application your previous address and current mailing address.
