The Georgia window tint law prohibits any window tinting that allows less than 32% of light into the vehicle, as well as tinting below the top six inches of the windshield. On the rear windshield and back side windows of vans and SUVs, any tinting darkness is permitted.
Lots of drivers choose to tint their windows to improve visibility on the road or to enhance their car’s look. But many states set limits on tinting in order to prevent accidents. While some tinting can improve visibility by filtering out harsh rays, windows that are too dark can impede a driver’s vision.
Georgia’s window tint law is fairly straightforward, but the consequences for non-compliance could include major fines and jail time. Car insurance comparison and broker app Jerry is here to walk you through the fine print of the Georgia window tint law.

What is the visible light transmission percentage?

Each state sets a legal limit on visible light transmission (VLT) percentage for tinted windows. The VLT refers to the amount of light that can pass through a tinted film.
A tinted window with a higher VLT allows more light into the vehicle. For example, if you cover your windows with a 75% VLT tint, they’ll let in 75% of visible light. By contrast, a 5% VLT tint would only let in 5% of light.

What is the Georgia window tint law?

The new Georgia window tint law was passed in 2005 and sets specific limits on VLT for sedans, SUVs, and vans.
For sedans, the limits are:
  • Front windshield: Non-reflective tint on the top 6 inches of the windshield
  • Front seat side windows: 32% VLT or higher
  • Back seat side windows: 32% VLT or higher
  • Rear window: 32% VLT or higher
For SUVs and vans, Georgia sets the following limits:
  • Front windshield: Non-reflective tint on the top 6 inches of the windshield
  • Front seat side windows: 32% VLT or higher
  • Back seat side windows: Any tint darkness
  • Rear window: Any tint darkness
You are not allowed to tint your windows red or amber, and any tint must be no more than 20% reflective
Georgia requires manufacturers of window tinting film to certify the film they sell in the state. When you get your windows tinted, make sure that the dealer is using certified film, or you could be out of compliance with the law.

Medical exemptions

The Georgia Department of Public Safety can issue an exemption for motor vehicles that regularly transport a passenger who needs to be shielded from the sun’s direct rays for medical reasons. To apply for an exemption, you must provide written attestation of your medical condition from a licensed medical practitioner or optometrist

Penalties for violating the window tint law

The penalties for violating Georgia’s window tint law are serious. Under the 2005 statute, violation of window tint regulations is considered a misdemeanor and punishable by a $1,000 fine and up to 12 months imprisonment
The law applies to residents and non-residents, so be careful if you’re driving with tinted windows in Georgia!
