In Louisiana, cars are considered “classic” if they’re more than 25 years old, are registered in the name of the owner, and qualify to be eligible for antique plates under Louisiana law. In Louisiana, classic car insurance must include liability insurance
Insuring your classic car is different from insuring your everyday vehicle. You don’t drive a classic or antique car as often, finding replacement parts can be a tough task, and your classic car is probably worth more than the average car—so you’ll need specialty car insurance coverage.
The car insurance broker and comparison shopping app Jerry is breaking down everything you need to know about classic car insurance in Louisiana to help you best protect your unique ride.

What is classic car insurance?

Classic car insurance is designed to provide coverage specifically for classic or antique vehicles. While classic car insurance has many similar coverages to regular car insurance, it does come with further limitations, such as maintenance requirements and mileage caps.

What is a classic or antique car?

Typically, a classic car is 10 to 24 years old with historic interest, such as a vintage sports car or hot rod.
An antique car is 25 years or older and has demonstrated historic interest. For insurance purposes, any classic car older than 25 years is considered an antique.

What makes classic car insurance different?

The value of the car is the biggest difference between a classic car and an average car. For a classic car, there is no predetermined “book value”, since each one is unique in its own, special way.
You’ll have to come to an agreement with your insurance carrier about your own classic or antique car’s value. This will be specified and written into your policy agreement. Your car will be covered up to that agreed-upon amount without depreciation.
Some other key metrics differentiate classic car insurance from the insurance you buy for the car you use every day:
  • Price: Classic car coverage is often cheaper than a regular car insurance policy.
  • Limited use: Classic cars have a mileage limit and can only be used periodically for events such as exhibitions, shows, club activities, parades, or the occasional pleasure drive.
  • Storage: Classic cars should be stored safely under lock-and-key.
  • Condition: The car must be restored, maintained, and preserved in its original condition (or be undergoing restoration).

Louisiana classic car insurance

The following are the criteria you must meet for your vehicle to be eligible for antique license plates in Louisiana:
  • Car must be at least 25 model years old
  • Must be registered in the name of the applicant
  • Vehicle can be any private passenger car, van, truck, or motorhome weighing no more than 16,000 lbs
If applying for Louisiana antique plates, these are the requirements:
  • Submit a Personalized License Plate Application along with a current, color photograph of the vehicle
  • Submit a notarized affidavit attesting to the fact that the vehicle has not and will not be altered or modified from the original manufacturer’s model, and that it will be used only for purposes of exhibitions, parades, club activities, and for the public interest, as well as any necessary maintenance, testing, and storage purposes
  • Include a photocopy of the applicant’s membership in an antique car club
  • If the vehicle is not in the applicant’s name, include the relevant title and fees along with the plate request
If a classic car with Louisiana antique plates is sold, the antique plates can remain with the car under new owners. Antique plates can also be transferred to another antique or classic car in the applicant’s name, so long as the new vehicle is deemed eligible to carry antique plates.
In Louisiana, the minimum coverage required for a classic car is as follows:

What impacts the cost of classic car insurance in Louisiana?

For the most part, classic car insurance is usually cheaper than a standard car insurance policy. The price will vary, though, depending on what kind of coverage you need for your antique or classic car.
Here are some other things that may impact your classic car insurance rates:
  • Model year
  • Stated or guaranteed value—pricier cars will be more expensive to insure
  • Mileage—the more you drive, the higher your premium will be
  • Customization—roadside assistance, flatbed towing, and spare parts coverage will increase your premium
  • Your driving record—many companies will only offer classic car insurance to drivers with clean records

Benefits of classic car insurance

Regular car insurance won’t protect a classic or antique vehicle against loss or damage. If the value of your car exceeds its original selling price, it may be deemed a collectible—you may need to buy specialized classic car insurance.
Here are some of the main benefits to buying classic car insurance:
  • Lower rates than regular car insurance (often anywhere from 40% to 70% less)
  • Higher coverage limits (often up to $500,000)
  • Negotiable deductibles and yearly mileage caps
  • Guaranteed or agreed value coverage
  • Plenty of optional add-ons, such as towing with flatbed trucks and coverage for memorabilia, spare parts, etc.
  • Discounts for additional security features, such as GPS tracking, VIN etching, and alarms
  • Claims handling from fellow car enthusiasts
  • Potential discounts on collector car club memberships

Do I need classic car insurance?

If you own any of the following, you’ll most likely need to buy specialty insurance coverage:
  • Antique & classic cars
  • Vintage boats
  • Modern collector vehicles
  • Modified vehicles
  • Classic trucks and utility vehicles
  • Retired commercial vehicles
  • Motorsports vehicles
  • Vintage motorcycles and scooters
  • Vehicles under construction
  • Antique tractors
  • Collector trailers
  • Classic military vehicles
