, cars are considered “classic” if they’re more than 25 years old, are registered in the owner's name, and qualify to be eligible for antique plates under Louisiana law. If your vehicle qualifies, consider protecting it with a special classic car insurance policy.

, it has further limitations, such as maintenance requirements and mileage caps.
Classic and antique cars are at least 10 years old and have historic interest
To fit in one of these categories, a vehicle must meet certain age and historic interest requirements.
Classic car: Typically, a classic car is 10 to 24 years old with historic interest, such as a vintage sports car or hot rod.
Antique car: An antique car is 25 years or older and has demonstrated historic interest. For insurance purposes, any classic car older than 25 years is considered an antique.
Classic car insurance doesn’t include a predetermined vehicle value
The car's value is the biggest difference between classic and average cars. There is no predetermined “book value” for a classic car since each one is unique in its own special way.
You’ll have to come to an agreement with your insurance carrier about your own classic or antique car’s value
This will be specified and written into your policy agreement
Your car will be covered up to that agreed-upon amount without depreciation
Some other key metrics differentiate classic car insurance from the insurance you buy for the car you use every day:
Price: Classic car coverage is often cheaper than a regular car insurance policy.
Limited use: Classic cars have a mileage limit and can only be used periodically for events such as exhibitions, car shows, club activities, parades, or the occasional pleasure drive.
Storage: Classic cars should be stored safely under lock and key.
Condition: The car must be restored, maintained, and preserved in its original condition (or be undergoing restoration).
Buying Louisiana classic car insurance
Eligibility: In the state of Louisiana, the following are the criteria you must meet for your vehicle to be eligible for antique license plates:
Type: Can be any private passenger car, van, truck, or motorhome weighing no more than 16,000 lbs
Application: If applying for Louisiana antique plates, these are the requirements:
Submit a Personalized License Plate Application along with a current, color photograph of the vehicle.
Submit a notarized affidavit attesting to the fact that the vehicle has not and will not be altered or modified from the original manufacturer’s model, and that it will be used only for purposes of exhibitions, parades, club activities, and for the public interest, as well as any necessary maintenance, testing, and storage purposes.
Include a photocopy of the applicant’s membership in an antique car club.
If the vehicle is not in the applicant’s name, include the relevant title and fees along with the plate request.
License plate transfer: If a classic car with Louisiana antique plates is sold, the antique plates can remain with the car under new owners. Antique plates can also be transferred to another antique or classic car in the applicant’s name, so long as the new vehicle is deemed eligible to carry antique plates.
What impacts the cost of classic car insurance in Louisiana?
For the most part, classic car insurance is usually cheaper than a standard car insurance policy. The price will vary, though, depending on what kind of coverage you need for your antique or classic car.
Here are some other things that may impact your classic car insurance rates:
Model year
Stated or guaranteed value—pricier cars will be more expensive to insure
Mileage—the more you drive, the higher your premium will be
Protection: Unfortunately, regular car insurance won’t protect a classic or antique vehicle against loss or damage. If the value of your car exceeds its original selling price, it may be deemed a collectible—you may need to buy specialized collector car insurance.
Here are some of the main benefits of buying classic car insurance:
Rates: Lower rates than regular car insurance (often anywhere from 40% to 70% less)
Limits: Higher coverage limits (often up to $500,000)
